§ Mr. Brothertonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of green goddesses used during the firemen's strike; how many are in need of repair or replacement; and what is the estimated cost of repairs and replacement to bring the fleet up to the strength prevailing before the start of the firemen's strike.
§ Dr. Summerskill1,065 green goddesses were used during the firemen's strike, of which some 860 were deployed for fire-fighting operations at any one time. It will take some time for all the appliances to be checked by maintenance staff. It would be premature, therefore, to attempt to estimate the number in need of repair and the estimated costs. 15 appliances were damaged beyond economic repair; it is not proposed to replace them.
