HC Deb 15 December 1978 vol 960 c652W
Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when the EEC directives concerning the right of establishment of veterinary surgeons in member States and the freedom to provide services are likely to be adopted.

Mr. John Silkin:

At its meeting on 18th December, the Council of Ministers approved the texts of two veterinary directives, one of which is concerned with the mutual recognition of veterinary qualifications in member States and the other with the co-ordination of training. The Council also adopted a decision to set up an advisory committee on veterinary training. The purpose of the committee is to ensure a comparably high standard of training in all member States and to advise the Commission in this respect. In addition, the Council made a recommendation to the effect that the veterinary qualifications of nationals of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg obtained in a third country should be recognised in all member States.

The Government are satisfied that the new arrangements will facilitate the activities of the veterinary profession within the Community.
