Mrs. RenéeShort asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will publish in the Official Report details of her Department's nursery education building programme for 1978–79; and if she will make a statement about the programme for 1979–80.
§ Mrs. Shirley Williams:I give below a table showing local education authorities' initial bids and the allocations for 1978–79 announced in April 1978. My Department was also able to make small allocations to Sefton and Knowsley which submitted later bids. During the course of the year a number of authorities have requested additional resources and my Department has been able to meet some of these requests from a small reserve. Nearly half the authorities, however, made no bid for the programme.
495WThe amount available for the 1979–80 programme—£5.9 million—represents an increase over 1978–79 of 34 per cent. at constant prices. In 1978–79 bids were made by 53 authorities in England and for 1979–80 67 bids have been received to date. Allocations which, as before, will give priority to the needs of areas of social and educational disadvantage and of the handicapped, will be announced shortly.
