HC Deb 15 December 1978 vol 960 cc399-400W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Lord President of the Council what is the salary which would have to be paid currently to hon. Members to preserve the same relativity between parliamentary salaries and the average industrial wage as existed in 1964.

Mr. Foot:

The results of the annual October inquiry of average weekly earnings of manual workers in manufacturing and certain other industries is not yet available for 1978. An alternative series is the monthly index of average earnings of all employees in production and certain other industries. Increasing the Members' salary as it stood in September 1964 in line with the movement in the index between that date and September 1978 produces a figure of £15,665.
