HC Deb 15 December 1978 vol 960 c678W
Mr. Haselhurst

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether candidates canvassing for support for union office in his Department's establishments with restricted access, are positively vetted before being allowed to attend.

Dr. Gilbert:

No restrictions on access have been promulgated regarding those who may wish to canvas for union office in MOD establishments, but anyone who does not hold an appropriate MOD pass permitting entry to the premises concerned must be sponsored by a permanent passholder in order to obtain a temporary pass and must normally be escorted while on the premises in order to ensure that he does not gain unauthorised access to classified information. There is no question of any form of security clearance being given.
