Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total number of employees, including office staff, of each of the regional water authorities, separately, at their inception and at the latest available date.

Mr. Denis Howell:

The earliest date for which figures are available for regional water authority staff is 31st March 1975.

The figures for regional water authority employees at 31st March in the years 1975 and 1978 are set out in the table below:

Gross employment costs, including employer's contribution to national insurance, for the years ended 31st March 1975 and 31st March 1978 for each regional water authority are given in the attached table.
