§ Mr. Hannamasked the Secretary of State for Energy what detailed studies are being made in the United Kingdom or the EEC of the total energy content of different products as opposed to direct content.
§ Dr. John Cunningham:The Department of Energy, together with the Department of Industry, is funding energy audit studies in 21 sectors of industry. These include an assessment of the total energy required, as distinct from the energy consumed directly during manufacture, and 668W the scope for energy conservation. Three detailed reports on the iron casting, dairy and brick industries have already been published,and placed in the Library. In addition valuable work has been undertaken in universities and research organisations. Details of work undertaken in the EEC are not readily available, but the United Kingdom has participated in an international comparative study covering steel making, cement and plastics.
