HC Deb 06 December 1978 vol 959 cc704-5W
Sir George Young

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with current measures which prevent the sale of cigarettes to young people under the age of 16 years.

Mr. Moyle:

The enforcement of legislation governing the sale of cigarettes to persons under the age of 16 is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department, and I would refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Brent, South (Mr. Pavitt) on 24th November.—[Vol. 958, c. 761.]

The voluntary agreements which my Department has with the tobacco industry include a number of measures designed to ensure that the advertising and promotion of cigarettes is not directed at young people under age 18. I am keeping under review all aspects of the agreements, including especially these particular provisions.
