§ Mr. Harry Ewing:The total cost of Scottish prisons in the financial year 1976–77, the latest figure available, divided by the daily average population, gives a figure of £67.46 as the cost of keeping an adult in prison for one week. Separate figures for males and females are not available. The marginal cost of keeping a prisoner for a week cannot be exactly calculated but is, of course, very much less.
