Mr. Tim Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what action he is taking to stop the spread of salmonellosis.

Mr. Strang:

My right hon. Friend the Minister, and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services have made various regulations under the Food and Drugs Act designed to improve hygiene standards in the production of meat for human consumption.

My right hon. Friend the Minister is also considering the practicability of introducing controls on the processing of animal protein for animal feeding stuffs which would be designed to reduce the incidence of infection.
