HC Deb 03 August 1978 vol 955 cc560-1W
Mr. David Hunt

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the West German authorities over the detention of Nigel Evans since his arrest on 12th May; and what steps are being taken to obtain full details of the charges to be brought against him and to arrange bail on his behalf.

Mr. Tomlinson

No representations have been made to the West German authorities on behalf of Mr. Evans and it would be inappropriate to do so while the case is sub judice. Mr. Evans has been given a summary of the charges to be brought against him which are connected with evasion of customs duties and tax payments on oil. Bail has so far been refused but a further application is to be made on 15th August. British consular officers are in regular contact with Mr. Evans and my right hon. Friend's Department is ready to assist in any way it properly can.
