Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give particulars of the 12 firms which have received in aggregate the greatest value of road building contracts placed by his Department in the past three years and the total value of the contracts received by each.

9. Mears Construction Ltd. 11.0
10. Fairclough Civil Engineering Ltd. (a) 10.6
11. Amey Roadstone Construction Ltd. (b) 10.0
12. Southern Counties Construction Co. Ltd. 9.5
(a) Sir Alfred McAlpine and Son Ltd. and Fairclough Civil Engineering Ltd. in consortium have been awarded three other contracts valued at £36.8 million.
(b) This firm has received one other contract in consortium with Balfour Beatty Ltd. valued at £11.3 million.
