Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether, in view of the recent closure of Langwith Colliery and other employment factors, he will consider the need to include the remaining parts of Bolsover constituency, namely, Shire-brook, Scarcliffe, Langwith Pleasley, New Houghton, Glapwell and Doe Lea, in any future intermediate area recommendations for the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire coalfield area.

Industry and employment in the West Midlands benefit from (he measures which my Department has introduced in order to strengthen the country's industrial competitiveness. These include the sectoral and general schemes under section 8 of the Industry Act 1972; and the product and process development scheme and the microprocessor application scheme under the Science and Technology Act 1965. The assistance made available in the West Midlands under the section 8 schemes is as follows:
