§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will tabulate in the Official Report the salaries in £ sterling proposed to be paid to the staff of the European School to be established in connection with the Joint European Torus project at Culham, Oxfordshire, showing those parts which may be subject to United Kingdom tax, together with the Burnham Scale salaries for comparable posts in England and Wales.
§ Miss Margaret JacksonThe salaries paid to teachers in European schools are laid down in the teaching staff regulations of the European schools. The salaries, including the Community weighting for the United Kingdom of 36.5 per cent., are as follows:
Minimum Maximum £ £ Head teacher 11,489 18,447 Secondary teacher 8,960 15,916 Primary teacher 6,491 12,015 Nursery teacher 5,964 10,586 The teachers are recruited by the respective Governments who continue to pay the appropriate national salary at the time of transfer. The European schools make up the difference.
The British teachers will pay United Kingdom tax on the whole of their in- 484W come. Non-British teachers will not be subject to United Kingdom tax but will pay tax in their own countries on their national salaries.
The European school at Culham is not opening until September; it will provide for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18 and will be organised in different language sections. All these factors mean that no valid comparison can be drawn with teaching posts in this country.
