HC Deb 03 August 1978 vol 955 cc597-8W
Mr. James Johnson

asked the Minister of Overseas Development whether she will consider making a grant for transport costs for materials sent to Eritrea for humanitarian relief.

Mr. Tomlinson

We have already made £25,000 available to the disasters emergency committee to help meet the costs of the transport of voluntary agencies' relief sent to the Horn of Africa. We understand that some £17,500 remains unspent. We are prepared to allow this to be used to meet transport costs of agencies' supplies sent to Eritrea as part of the response to the International Red Cross appeal which covers both sides of the conflict and to which, as my right hon. Friend announced on 5th July, Her Majesty's Government are contributing £150,000. If the transport costs of voluntary agencies' contributions to the international relief efforts in the area exceed £25,000, we shall be happy to consider further help.
