HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 c373W
Mr. Miscampbell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will state for Lancashire the average teacher ratio in the primary and secondary schools and the average amount spent in respect of pupils in both the primary and secondary sector.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Pupil teacher ratios within maintained schools for Lancashire at January 1977, the latest available information, are 25.2 for primary schools and 16.9 for secondary schools.

My Department does not prepare figures of per capita expenditure on education for each local education authority, but certain analyses of their estimates and expenditure on primary and secondary education are contained in the education statistics published annually by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, copies of which are available in the Library. Following are the most recent figures for Lancashire extracted from the 1978–79 edition of "Education Estimates Statistics":

FINANCIAL YEAR 1978–79
Unit Costs: net expenditure basis
Primary £288
Secondary £476
