Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many motor cars were produced in the United Kingdom for the first six months of the current year; how many were sold in the home market; how many were exported in that period; and how many were in stock of the manufacturers premises at the beginning and end of the period.

Mr. Cryer

In the first six months of 1978, 721,000 cars were produced in the United Kingdom, of which 434,000 were for the home market and 287,000 for export. Reliable information is not available about the number of cars held in stock at manufacturers' premises.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will estimate the number and value of motor cars lost due to industrial disputes in the first six months of the current year in the Unted Kingdom.

Imports of passenger motor cars n the period January to June 1978 were 433,080 units. New registrations of imported cars in the period January to June 1978 were 408,754, according to figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Information is not available of the number of cars in stock on importers premises.
