HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 cc377-8W
Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list for every year since 1945 (a) the total budget administered by her Department, and (b) the portion of that budget spent on capital projects, both measured at constant prices.

Mr. Oakes

While information is not readily available in precisely the form requested, the following table shows the total expenditure in Great Britain on education and libraries, science and arts at 1977 survey prices from 1968–69 education, together with comparable figures for England and Wales, are contained in the education statistics published annually by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, copies of which are available in the Library. Following are the most recent figures extracted from the 1978–79 edition of "Education Estimates Statistics" together with corresponding figures for the south-west region calculated from information in this publication.
