HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 cc452-3W
Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking within the various international bodies of which the United Kingdom is a member to establish an international code for the transport of hazardous chemicals.

Mr. William Rodgers

Several such international codes already exist, namelythe European agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road (ADR); the international regulations concerning the carriage of dangerous goods by rail (RID), annexed to the international convention concerning the carriage of goods by rail (CIM); and the code for the carriage of dangerous goods by sea (IMDG) formulated by the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (IMCO).

The United Kingdom has adopted all these international codes and plays an active part in discussions on amending them from time to time, and also in the discussions of the United Nations Committee of Experts on the transport of dangerous goods, which has produced comprehensive recommendations applying to all modes of transport.
