HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 cc449-50W
43. Mr. Stanbrook

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied with the training and qualifications required of drivers of passenger coaches; and if he will institute a review of the standards of competence and hours worked by coach drivers as compared with those required in London Transport.

Mr. Horam

The training of drivers of passenger coaches is the responsibility of the industry, assisted by the Road Transport Industry Training Board. I am satisfied with the standards applied in the licensing of public service vehicle drivers. I do not propose to institute a review of the standards of competence or of the hours worked by coach drivers, which are now governed either by EEC regulation 543/69, or in the case of regular services, with route lengths not exceeding 50 kilometres (like those of London Transport) by the less restrictive provisions in the Transport Act 1968.
