§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Industry (1) what inquiries he has made through the National Enterprise Board about the effect on the labour force of British Leyland in South Africa of the merger between Leyland and the Sigma Motor Corporation; whether African trade unions were consulted about it; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what will be the value of the holding of the National Enterprise Board in Sigma-Leyland in South Africa; whether he has given his approval to a holding by the National Enterprise Board in a South African registered company; and, if so, under what conditions.
§ Mr. KaufmanThe details of the proposed merger between Leyland South Africa and the Sigma Motor Corporation have yet to be finalised. The question of any need for Ministerial approval will depend on the specific terms of the eventual agreement. Consultation with African trade unions is a matter for British Leyland management.
