asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is, at latest survey prices, the total expenditure on research and development associated with the advanced gas-cooled reactor programme; what contributions are made by the electricity authorities to those costs; and what is the capital expenditure to date on each of the five advanced gas-cooled reactor stations.

The following table shows typical prices and price increases for household coal in a selection of towns for February 1974 and July 1978. These prices generally relate to domestic consumer deliveries of between five and nine hundredweight (cwt).

During the period 19th February 1974 to 13th June 1978, the coal and smokeless fuel component of the general index of retail prices rose by 122.4 per cent. and the all-items index increased by 93.9 per cent.

I am advised by the CEGB that the total electricity generated by its AGR stations was about 6.2 TWh up to end June 1978. Hunterston is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
