HC Deb 01 August 1978 vol 955 c300W
Mr. Newton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what were the main conclusions of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory's study of rumble strips; and what guidance he has issued to highway authorities in consequence.

Mr. Horam

The study showed that, where rumble areas were used to alert drivers on the approach to hazards, there was no consistent effect on speeds, but that the strips may have had some effect in reducing accidents related to high speed or lack of awareness. I do not consider I would be justified in recommending highway authorities to install these areas as a road safety measure, but they are free to reach their own conclusions on whether rumble areas offer value for money.
