§ 39. Sir David Rentonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what further education is provided for mentally handicapped adolescents end adults in adult training centres.
§ Mr. MoyleDetailed information is not held centrally, but a survey of 305 adult training centres carried out btween 1972 and 1976 indicated that most centres included some educational content in their programmes. and that about one-third of the centres had been visited at least once during the past year by staff of local education authorities. A small number of trainees at centres are now attend-258W ing further education colleges for some part of their programme. The Warnock Committee has made recommendations about further education for trainees in adult training centres, and these are under study. The National Development Group for the Mentally Handicapped has also made some relevant observations in its pamphlet on day services for mentally handicapped adults, on which views are being sought.
