HC Deb 01 August 1978 vol 955 cc312-3W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many units of council accommodation have been provided for single homeless people other than those receiving old-age pensions in each of the past five years.

Mr. Armstrong

Information is not available in the precise form requested. It is estimated that the numbers of single homeless people (excluding those of pensionable age) for whom local authorities in England have accepted responsibility for securing accommodation in 1975, 1976 and the first half of 1977 are as follows:

1975 780
1976 1,270
January-June 1977 720

It is not known how many of these will have been provided with council accommodation—however, it is estimated that about 80 per cent. of homeless households who obtain permanent accommodation are accommodated by the local authority. Estimates for the rest of 1977, and for the first quarter of 1978 will be published very shortly, and I will write to the hon. Member then.
