Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost of paying the higher rates of supplementary benefit to persons unemployed for more than two years.

Mr. Deakins

The benefit cost of paying the long-term rates to unemployed persons who had been receiving supplementary benefit for more than two years is estimated at £33 million in 1979–80, at 1978 survey prices.
