§ Mr. Lawrenceasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many (a) police car drivers, (b) fire appliance drivers and (c) ambulance drivers were prosecuted in each of the past three years for speeding offences or failing to observe traffic signals; under what provision of which statutes the prosecutions were brought; and whether any advice is given 704W to chief officers of police about prosecution in such circumstances.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesThe information requested in the first part of the Question is not available. Prosecutions for exceeding a speed limit and for failing to comply with traffic light signals would be brought under the appropriate sections of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1967 and the Road Traffic Act 1972 and regulations made under them. The instituting of proceedings in any particular case is a matter for individual chief officers of police.
