asked the Secretary of State for Employment if there is any means of paying a supportive allowance to an adult family man whose own savings permit him to pay for a nongovernmental retraining course but where these are insufficient for him to maintain his family during his retraining period.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that no allowances are payable in the particular circumstances described. I will, however, examine the case to see if there are any possible means of help if the hon. Member will let me have details.
