asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cars were stolen on Merseyside in each of the past five years, to the latest available date.

The information is available only from 1st April 1974 and is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales" (Table 29 of the volume for 1976 (Cmnd. 6909)). The number of such offences recorded by the police in Merseyside in 1977 was 22,652.

Merseyside Police have supplied the following information for their A Division which covers about 90 per cent. of the Liverpool, Scotland Exchange constituency.
