HC Deb 26 April 1978 vol 948 cc601-2W
Mrs. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services for what post-graduate courses registered medical practitioners can claim expenses under the National Health Service; whether courses in homoeopathic medicine are included; and, if not, why not.

Mr. Moyle

For hospital doctors and community physicians the payment of expenses for attendance at courses is a matter for health authorities; for general practitioners such payments are subject to the courses being approved by the postgraduate medical deans of universities.

Post-graduate medical education is primarily for the professional educational bodies concerned, especially the Council for Postgraduate Medical Education. The Council's view is that training in homoeopathy is not of sufficient relevance to modern medical practice to warrant financial support for courses for general practitioners and the post-graduate deans have accepted their advice.
