HC Deb 24 April 1978 vol 948 c449W
Mr. Stanbrook

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will publish in the Official Report a list of teacher-pupil ratios for each local education authority in England at primary and secondary school levels, respectively.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Staffing standards, which are ratios based on the numbers of qualified teachers actually employed in schools on the day the Department takes it annual count, were published on 29th December 1977 for maintained primary and secondary schools separately in each local education authority in England for January 1977, and are available in the Library. Pupil-teacher ratios, which take account of all the teachers employed by local education authorities, cannot readily be provided separately for primary and secondary schools as it is not possible to apportion those teachers whose service is divided between different types of school and those who are away from school for extended periods.
