HC Deb 24 April 1978 vol 948 c420W
Mr. Tierney

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the level of fines imposed at Bow Street Magistrates' Court for excessive speeding offences show variation when compared with similar fines imposed by magistrates' courts in general.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The latest available comparison relates to 1976 and is given in the following table. Individual courts may be dealing with different types of offence and different circumstances. There was a good deal of variation in the average fine from one court to another and the average fine at Bow Street was not exceptionally low.

We shall assist in putting the Bill into a more workable form during its proceedings in another place.
