HC Deb 24 April 1978 vol 948 c427W
43. Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

asked the Secretary of State for Defence why the mileage allowance for the Armed Forces using their own cars on duty is 4.1p per mile, less a personal contribution, as compared with 13.4p per mile allowed to the Civil Service and honourable Members.

Dr. Gilbert

Members of the Armed Forces using their own cars for official journeys are paid 13.4p per mile when the vehicles have an engine capacity over 1750 cc. This is the same rate as that paid to civil servants.

The rate of 4.1p per mile is paid, subject to certain conditions, when members of the Armed Forces travel from home to place of work. This allowance is not normally available to civil servants.
