§ Mr. Watkinsonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the size of funds he spends annually on medical research.
§ Mr. Moyle, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 14th April 1978], gave the following information:
My Department has commissioned research in the health and personal social services fields worth £8½ million in 1978–79, of which approximately half could be said to be in the medical sphere. Biomedical research to meet the needs of my 337W Department is carried out on my behalf by the Medical Research Council at a cost, in 1978–79, of about £10 million. In addition, the NHS will in 1978–79 spend over £2 million on the locally organised research scheme, under which most of the work can be classified as medical.
