HC Deb 14 April 1978 vol 947 cc541-2W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he gave evidence to the Armed Forces Pay Review Body containing details of (a) examples of the average weekly hours worked by typical members of the Services and (b) the maximum hours regularly worked by a typical number of Service men and women.

Expenditure on the pay, allowances, etc. of the Armed Forces in each of the last four financial years, expressed at constant 1977 survey prices, was:

£ m.
1974–75 1,530
1975–76 1,515
1976–77 1,480
1977–78 1,445

The decline reflects manpower reductions following the 1974 Defence Review. Costs are, of course, affected by the level of pay as well as numbers.
