HL Deb 13 April 1978 vol 390 c868WA
Lord HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about violations of human rights in Vietnam since 1975, and whether religious freedoms are being denied both to individuals and to religious bodies.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

Many Vietnamese are still detained without trial in camps, for so-called "re-education". Priests and some bishops are believed to have been imprisoned after the present Government took control of all Vietnam, when repressive measures were also taken against Buddhists. The activities of religious organisations are still circumscribed but religious practice is tolerated.

House adjourned at seven o'clock.
