HC Deb 13 April 1978 vol 947 cc536-7W
Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what percentages of tyres used on military vehicles are manufactured in the United Kingdom; and if he will issue instructions that only British-made tyres shall be purchased.

Dr. Gilbert

The major United Kingdom vehicle manufacturers have assured Ministry of Defence officials that tyres for new vehicles they order will be placed with manufactures who have plants in the United Kingdom. Contracts for the supply of tyres to meet the Services maintenance requirements for 1978–79 have already been negotiated and some 98 per cent. by value will be made in Britain. The need for special instructions does not therefore arise.
