asked the Prime Minister if, in the light of supermarket trading methods as one of the causes of the demise of Spillers bread manufacturing of the effect of supermarket trading methods on shoplifting statistics, of unsupervised sales by supermarkets of alcoholic beverages and of the effect on manufacturers prices of the insistence of supermarkets that certain manufacturers are obliged to undertake merchandising activities which increase the price of goods supplies, he will set up an interdepartmental inquiry between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Home Office, the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection and the Department of Trade, to investigate the effect of supermarket trading on the availability and supply of food items, the increase in alcoholism amongst housewives the increase in certain criminal activities and the increase in food prices; and if he will make a statement.
