HC Deb 13 April 1978 vol 947 c467W
Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what steps he is considering to prevent unauthorised use of plutonium at all plants dealing with it or planned to deal with it such as at Wind-scale.

Mr. Eadie

British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority apply strict physical security measures to protect plutonium in their charge—measures which are kept under constant review. Detailed nuclear materials accounting procedures are used to record all production, stocks and movements of plutonium. Exports of plutonium are authorised by the Government only when they are satisfied as to the end use and that safeguards and other protective measures will be applied in a manner consistent with our obligations under the NPT and as a supplier of nuclear material.
