HC Deb 13 April 1978 vol 947 cc527-8W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if, in view of the disparity between the retail cost of a loaf of bread and the cost of the raw materials which it contains, he will refer the level of bread prices to the Price Commission.

Mr. Maclennan

I do not believe it would be useful, in the light of recent events in the industry and of the report last year by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission on flour and bread, to refer the industry to the Price Commission for a sectoral examination. It is for the Price Commission, not for me, to decide whether price increases prenotified by bakers should be investigated.
