HC Deb 13 April 1978 vol 947 cc514-5W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether she will specify in detail the amounts of the normal purchase grants for acquisitions made available on 1st April 1978 to the national museums, galleries and libraries, broken down to the individual institutions, and covering the financial year beginning on that date, as distinct from any sums deriving from the abnormal £1 million made available to assist with the preservation of the national heritage which she announced on 26th October 1977;

(2) whether, pursuant to her reply of 3rd April, Official Report, Vol. 947, c. 53, she will now list the breakdown of the additional £1 million provided to assist with the preservation of the national heritage.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The English share of the £1 million was £840,000 which, after allowing for price increases, was distributed broadly in proportion to the purchase grants for 1977–78 but with some extra allowance for local museums and to take account of greater price movement in the applied and decorative arts and in archaeology.
