Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what increase there was in total employment between mid-1972 and mid-1977; and by how much the work force has increased in the same period.

Mr. Golding

Between mid-1972 and mid-1977, there was an estimated increase of 487,000 in total employment in the United Kingdom. In the same period, the working population increased by 1,133,000.

Notes:

1. Total employment consists of employees in employment, self-employed persons—with or without employees—and Her Majesty's Forces.

2. The working population consists of total employment plus the registered unemployed—excluding adult students registered for vacation employment.

3. Estimates of employment for 1977 are provisional.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the total population was in civilian employment in mid-1977 compared with mid-1972.

Mr. Golding

The proportion of the United Kingdom total population in civilian employment was estimated to be 44 per cent. in 1977 and 43 per cent. in 1972. The estimate for 1977 is provisional.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employees were in employment in the United Kingdom in each year since 1970; and what are the comparable figures for West Germany.
