HC Deb 12 April 1978 vol 947 cc441-2W
Mr. Molloy

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total amount of supplementary funds that has been made available for educational purposes to the London borough of Ealing since 1973.

Mr. Oakes

The principal source of central Government finance for the education service is through the rate support grant, a block grant within which it is for each authority to determine its own spending priorities. Apart from the grants made under the urban programme and Section 11 of the Local Government Act 1966, details of which were given in the answer to my hon. Friend's Question of 17th January, the London borough of Ealing has received since 1973 specific grants amounting to £5.5 million, which represents 90 per cent. of the authority's spending on mandatory awards to students.
