HC Deb 11 April 1978 vol 947 cc349-50W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Trade on how many occasions, and up to what total value in £ sterling, the Export Credits Guarantee Department has guaranteed exports of goods manufactured in and sold to companies in foreign countries.

Mr. Meacher

There is a variety of circumstances in which ECGD guarantees are given for exports of foreign manufactures. For example, cover is available without restriction for re-exports of foreign manufactures incorporated in United Kingdom products sold on short-term credit. Cover may also be given for sales on short credit by United Kingdom merchants of foreign manufactures shipped from foreign countries to companies in other foreign countries. For sales on extended credit, guarantees may be given, usually under reciprocal arrangements with other countries, for foreign sub-contracts forming part of a United Kingdom main contract. It would be impossible to say how many times and for what amounts such cover has been given.
