HC Deb 11 April 1978 vol 947 cc387-8W
Miss Boothroyd

asked the Secretary of State for Social Service what facilities are available within the West Midlands for the screening of women for cancer of the breast and mammary disorders.

Mr. Moyle

In the West Midlands there are no facilities for the routine screening of women for breast cancer and mammary disorders, but every large hospital in the region provides outpatient clinics to which women can be referred by their GP for appropriate investigation and treatment. We are currently setting up trials in selected localities to help us decide whether there is sufficient evidence of its effectiveness and safety to justify the introduction of a national screening service for breast cancer.
