HC Deb 11 April 1978 vol 947 cc403-4W
Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the average daily total of Service men, and of civilians employed by the Department, who were based in the Aldershot area during each of the years 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969.

Dr. Gilbert

Figures for Service strengths in the Aldershot area for 1965 are not available. Those for the later years are: 1966, 9,000; 1967, 8,000; 1968, 8,200; 1969, 8,300.

Comparable civilian figures are not available, but it is estimated that the numbers rose from about 3,300 to 3,650 over the same period.

Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Defence in respect of how many Service men, and civilians employed by his Department, did accommodation and other facilities exist in the Aldershot area in each of the years 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969.

Dr. Gilbert

Living accommodation and other facilities in the Aldershot area were adequate for the number of Service personnel and civilians employed in the area in the years in question. All holdings are kept under review to ensure that they match requirements.

Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Service men, and civilians employed by his Department, were permanently moved north without replacement from the Aldershot area in each of the years 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969.

Dr. Gilbert

No permanent transfers of major units from Aldershot took place during the period in question.
