asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what has been the cumulative increase in the retail price index since the establishment of the Price Commission.

Since the establishment of the Price Commission on 2nd April 1973, the retail price index has increased by 106.9 per cent. Of course the cumulative increase contains sharp fluctuations in the rate of increase. Over the first 12 months to April 1974, the RPI rose by 15.2 per cent.; in the latest 12 months, to February 1978, the index increased by 9.5 per cent.
