HC Deb 10 April 1978 vol 947 c273W
Mr. Warren

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what reviews have taken place over the last four years of the salaries of staffs in the service of magistrates' courts; what increments were granted; and what proposals he has for a further review.

Mr. John

Salaries of staff in the magistrates' courts' service are reviewed annually by the joint negotiating committee concerned. The increases given over the last four years have corresponded with those given to the staffs of local authorities and have been in accord with the Government's economic policies. Proposals for a further review would be

1957–58 1967–68 1973–74 1977–78
£ million £ million £ million £ million (estimate)
Police 344.528 676.877 939.009 1,071.421
Prisons 41.981 113.57 202.007 233.342

Expressed as a percentage of the 1977–78 estimated expenditure the earlier years are as follows:

1957–58 1967–68 1973–74
Per cent. Per cent. Per cent.
Police 32.2 63.0 87.6
Prisons 17.99 48.67 86.57

The estimated total expenditure in 1977–78 represents £29.80 per head of adult population on police expenditure and £6.50 on prisons.
