HC Deb 10 April 1978 vol 947 c291W
36. Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what length of Hadrian's Wall and castles is owned by his Department; what information he has on the mileage owned by the National Trust and the conservation trusts and public bodies respectively; and what mileage is still in private ownership.

Mr. Shore

Only a mile or so of Hardian's Wall is in Crown ownership, but my Department has in its care under deeds of guardianship about 10 miles of intermittent lengths, with associated mile-castles and turrets, and three major Roman forts.

I understand the National Trust owns about 3 miles of the wall which is not in guardianship. A conservation trust owns two forts and a further one is owned by a local authority.

The remainder of Hadrian's Wall which has not been destroyed or covered by urban development and road building, amounting to about seven miles, is in private ownership.
