HC Deb 04 April 1978 vol 947 cc97-8W
28. Sir A. Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether, he will introduce legislation to provide that workers who oppose unofficial industrial action in the enterprises in which they work are able to claim unemployment benefit.

Mr. Orme

Under Section 19 of the Social Security Act, 1975, a person who has lost his employment because of, a stoppage of Work due to a trade dispute at his place of employment is disqualified for receiving unemployment benefit unless he can prove that he is neither participating in nor directly interested in the dispute. It would be neither practical nor equitable to try to distinguish, for benefit purposes, between claimants who supported, and those who opposed, action taken in the dispute.
